Due to the clean and rather warm water, the Mediterranean coast is actively used for tourism purposes. There are not many of them here, but it is better not to approach representatives of some species.
Giant hammerhead shark
The giant hammerhead shark is striking in its size. Its average length is 2.3 m, although in some cases adult individuals reach 5-6 m. The main characteristic feature of this fish is the presence of large outgrowths on the sides of the head, due to which it got its name.
Hammerhead sharks rarely attack humans and prefer to stay away from them. Her huge teeth can cause severe wounds. Usually, a meeting with a person takes place in shallow water, where a shark produces offspring. During this period, she is more aggressive than usual, and may attack first.
Mako Shark
Mako shark prefers warm waters, whose temperature is about 16 degrees. In the Mediterranean Sea, its habitat is limited to the west coast (Monaco, Spain, Italy, Malta, France). Much less often, this species of sharks can be found in the Aegean and Sea of Marmara.
Mako shark is considered the fastest shark in the world.. During the hunt, it can reach speeds of up to 74 km / h. Mako is a fairly aggressive species. She can attack boats, attack divers. There is even evidence that this predator was hopping aboard a ship.
Bull shark
The gray bull shark is also often called the bull shark or blunt shark. She prefers warm subtropical and tropical waters. In the Mediterranean, a bull shark is sometimes found near Morocco. Despite the fact that the bull shark swims rather slowly, during the hunt it becomes aggressive and fast.
Long-winged shark
The long-winged shark prefers the open ocean, but sometimes it swims in inland waters, including the Mediterranean Sea. When a long-winged shark sees a prey, it can fall into the so-called "food madness." In this state, the fish becomes extremely dangerous, including for humans. In the Mediterranean, attacks are extremely rare. However, in other seas they are quite common. The most famous incident of recent years was recorded in Sharm el-Sheikh, where in 2010 long-winged sharks attacked tourists several times.
White shark
White shark is considered the most dangerous predator in the Mediterranean Sea. The white shark lives in the waters of all the oceans of the Earth, with the exception of perhaps the Arctic. However, she prefers a temperate climate, so in the Mediterranean Sea she can be seen very rarely. Usually this fish is found in the waters of Israel, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Lebanon.
The white shark is extremely aggressive. Due to the combination of huge dimensions (length - 4-5 m, weight 600-1000 kg) and strong teeth, she stands at the top of the food pyramid. The relative danger for white sharks is perhaps only combed crocodiles and killer whales. This ferocious predator often attacks people, so it is better to stay away from it.
Despite the fact that several dozen species of sharks live in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and at least 15 of them can be dangerous to humans, attacks are relatively rare. Over the past 100 years, about 260 episodes of attacks on people have been recorded. Such statistics make rest in the Mediterranean the safest, although scientists urge not to lose vigilance and remember the rules for adequate behavior on the water.
